If a cautionary tale is a tale told to warn the listener of a danger, then this collection of ennui-filled poems is too late. The speaker of these alternately soft and thorny pieces is incapable of saving anyone from their fate, least of all themselves (maybe because they’re not entirely sure they want to). But if the ‘dangers’ it warns of feel inescapable as things are, that doesn’t mean they’re resigned to merely an ironic acknowledgment of the present. Each poem is itself an attempt to elicit a sense of dominance over an abiding lack—of control, of meaning, of love—among the artifice of abundance.
